Chapter Thirteen

I’m completely clueless about whether or not my dad called over to Tessa’s. I’m an idiot for not calling her to check before I left Jason’s house. I have no way of knowing if I can use Tessa as an excuse, and I wonder if he saw me get out of Lindsey’s car. All I can do is try to lie and pray for a miracle. I’m shaking as I move up the steps to my front door.

“Where in the hell have you been?” My dad is charging at me like a man on a mission.

I notice Chelsea standing off by the kitchen with a look of fear spread across her face. Whenever my dad gets this pissed, it scares everyone—even if you aren’t the one in trouble.

“I … uh … Tessa and I…” Anything I planned to say wasn’t coming out correctly.

“Megan, don’t you dare continue with the bullshit that’s about to come from your lying mouth. I called over to Tessa’s, and Janet said she’s at the movie with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend! So, I guess Tessa can run around town with guys now, and you think you can hide that from me?”

“I was over at a friend’s house.”

“I know all your friends, and nobody has seen you. You have about five seconds to tell me who the hell brought you home and from where,” he roars at me.

I glance at Chelsea and her eyes say, “Don’t you dare tell him the truth.”

“I was with a friend who you don’t know from Tessa’s school. Her name’s Lindsey,” I say. I mean, I’m pretty much telling the truth. “I lied about Tessa because you don’t know Lindsey, and I knew you’d be mad that I was with someone you don’t know. Honestly, Dad, what’s the big deal? I’m home safe, and she’s a girl I have become friends with.”

I was doing fine until I added that last part.

“What’s the big deal? I’ll tell you what the big damn deal is. I don’t approve of you riding around in a car with someone I don’t know! Not to mention, I had no clue where you were when I got home from work. That’s the big deal! You could’ve been dead in a ditch someplace, and I was worried sick. Unlike your mother, I want to know where my kids are!”

The fact that he threw my mother into this outrages me.

“You know what, Dad, it’s not even seven o’clock, so I’m pretty sure me being dead in a ditch is overboard. And leave Mom out of this! I’m sick of hearing how Mom has let you down!” I run for my room before the stunned silence that’s currently keeping my dad frozen in place sends him after me. I’m sure Chelsea thinks I’ve lost my mind talking to him this way.

I sit on my bed like a worm waiting for a bird to swoop in and kill it. At any moment he’s going to come storming through my door ready to ground me forever.
